Does sunscreen block the vitamin D that naturally comes from the sun's rays?

No, while sunscreen blocks some of the vitamin D provided by the sun, the benefits of using sunscreen far outweigh the benefits of receiving vitamin D in this manner. According to the Cancer Council, regular use of sunscreen when the UV Index is 3 or above during normal daily activity should not stop you getting enough vitamin D. You can check out todays UV index here: http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/uv/#forecastmap

Does higher SPF mean I can apply less frequently?

No, the SPF protection has nothing to do with the amount of time that the sunscreen will stay on your skin. For the best sun protection, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours to ensure it stays on your skin, especially after swimming, exercise, excessive perspiration and towel drying.

Generally, fair-skinned people often burn and are rarely able to tan, whilst darker skinned people with their increased melanin, have more natural protection to the sun but no one is immune to sun damage.
